The Little Prince - It's a Boy!!

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, delivered a boy Monday afternoon UK time, The child of Kate Middleton and Prince William will be third in line to the throne. Middleton gave birth in the private wing of Saint Mary's hospital in London. The boy, whose name was not immediately revealed, weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have thanked hospital staff for their "tremendous" care, as the world awaits the first glimpse of their baby son. Kensington Palace said: "Mother, son and father are all doing well." The family is expected to leave hospital on Tuesday evening or on Wednesday morning.

Gun salutes in Green Park and the Tower of London and the ringing of bells at Westminster Abbey marked the birth of the third in line to the throne.

Prince William was at the private Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, in west London, for the birth at 16:24 BST on Monday, and stayed with his wife and son overnight.

The arrival generated headlines and celebrations around the world, and prompted messages of goodwill to flood in:

  • New Yorkers were informed of the news when it was tickered in lights at Times Square
  • In London, Trafalgar Square was lit blue for a boy, while the BT Tower delivered the message: "It's a boy!"
  • At its peak, there were more than 25,000 tweets per minute about the royal baby's birth
  • US president Barack Obama said: "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings" while Australian PM Kevin Rudd said Australians wished "the royal bub all the best"
  • The Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Reverend Justin Welby, greeted the news by saying: "Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time"

That popularity may well extend to the prince’s influence on the U.K. economy. The U.K.'s Centre for Retail Research reported that the royal birth will boost retail sales of celebratory food, alcohol and memorabilia by £243 million ($372 million) between July 1 and August 31. The surge in spending is expected to affect everything from stroller sales – whichever Duchess Kate selects will become a must-have item – to shares of companies that sell baby products.

As for the prince’s long-term importance when it comes to the British economy. The birth of the prince means the monarchy has three generations of heirs to the throne for the first time since 1894. But it could be 50 or 60 years before he becomes king. Unlike his father and grandfather, he also may be the first prince to not join the armed services. Yet, what is a prince to do if he’s not a soldier? That, will be a difficult course to chart as he won’t be able to take a job where there’s a single chance of embarrassment, ruling out industries like banking and business.

There are few areas of life you can go into which are completely devoid of controversy.  But there's plenty of time for a boy who’s barely a day old.
