De-clutter your desk draws – 10 essentials

If you ever felt like you “live at work!”, you may find that your desk draws can clutter up fast.  Deborah Sweeney has some good recommendations to start the streamlining process by equipping your desk with these 10 essentials:

1) Chargers

From the phone to your iPod, the death of a single electronic item could mean the end of your day. Literally. Keep extra chargers on hand to avoid this from happening.

2) Extra Set of Earbuds

Or headphones, if you’re looking for something that can block out the white noise better and allow for concentration.

3) Lint Roller

Handy for both you and your coworkers.  Just be sure to reinforce that you aren’t lint roller central to everyone - your coworkers invest in one too.  As a backup you can use strips of Scotch tape to pick up and pull the lint off. This DIY version is nowhere near as fast as the actual roller but still an option.

4) Deodorant

Especially in the springtime and summertime when the dress code gets a little more lax. Stick to a travel-size, no reason to keep a huge stick in your drawer unless you know you need it.

5) Toothbrush and Toothpaste

When you’re drinking coffee all day or if you just want to tidy up your pearly whites after lunch, keep a travel-size of both these on hand. Crest Whitestrips are an optional extra.

6) Mini Hairbrush

Don’t let the breezy afternoon outdoors show on your head. The one time you don’t have this available is the one time where everyone and his uncle will want to meet with you.

7) First Aid Supplies

First aid essentials like antiseptic towelettes, ointments and creams, gauze, safety pins and tweezers go without saying, but consider tailoring to fit in some of your specific needs. If you wear contacts, make sure you have extra eye solution and a spare pair of lenses. If you feel a cold coming on, pack it up with packets of Emergen-C supplements and cough drops. If you know you get migraines easily, include plenty of aspirin.

8) Compact mirror plus

As a basis for any touch-up, have a good compact mirror on you.  While makeup could form its own list of 10 Essentials make sure to include some basics such as lipstick, blush, eye liner and eyelash curlers.

9) An Umbrella

Because there’s nothing worse than knowing that you have to be somewhere and you’re about to get drenched in a sudden down pour outside.

10) Light Snacks

Bubble gum, hard candy, and granola bars. Preferably you are bringing health snacks such as baby carrots or apple slices each day to tide you over. But on the days you had to skip lunch in favor of extra work you will need these backup items to stave off hunger pangs with a protein-infused nibble or something sweet to celebrate your Friday with.
